Works for classical guitar by Spanish and Latin American composers.
Georg Gulyás is a regular guest at concert halls throughout Europe, the USA, Russia and Japan. He has appeared several times as soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. He is often invited to give guest lectures and teaches regularly at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He studied at École Normale de musique in Paris (1993-1998) and at the Juilliard School in New York (1998-2000) as well as in Alicante, Spain and in Stockholm. Georg Gulyás made his recording début on Proprius with the acclaimed CD "Georg Gulyás plays Guitar Music from Latin America and Spain" (PRCD 2008). Georg Gulyás second CD on Proprius also consists of works by Spanish and Latin American composers. The first three works are by the Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega, for example the famous tremolo etude "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and "Capricho árabe". Tárrega was the first person to transcribe piano music by Isaac Albéniz for the guitar. Albéniz often used the guitar as a model for his compositions. Here Georg Gulyás plays "Córdoba" from the suite "Cantos de España Op. 232" and the very charming "Tango". Also included are pieces by Joaquín Turina ("Sevillana Op. 29"), Frederico Mompou ("Suite compostelana") and Manuel Ponce ("Sonatina meridional"). The CD ends with two of the world’s favourite tangos - the Argentine composer Angel Villoldo’s "El Choclo" and "La Cumparsita" by Matos Rodriguez from Uruguay. Tangos require a highly dynamic playing style if they are to have the right character so here the classically trained guitarist must put aside his traditional technique. Juan Domínguez, one of the leading exponents of the tango, has made a dynamic arrangement bringing new life to the crown-jewel of the tango,
"La Cumparsita".
